Mobile Monday Recap: Enterprise Apps

Mobile Monday Silicon Valley took place yesterday in downtown San Francisco. As you may know, Mobile Monday is a monthly gathering of industry professionals around the world in the mobile industry and is held in over 100 cities. This April meetup gathered with a focus on enterprise apps.  Various companies small and large took the stage to demo apps with the goal of showing businesses how they can stay productive on the go, access their files and data from the cloud and collaborate with colleagues on key corporate decisions.

Leading off the evening was Cisco. They demonstrated an indoor geo-location case study based on an augmented reality model where they partnered with the Copenhagen Airport in Denmark to track the movement of airline passengers through their smartphones’ wireless network. Based upon the data gathered, they use any patterns gathered to determine how to better operate the airport from optimizing passenger flow to knowing how to cope with possible delays.

Following Cisco were several startups also looking to make a splash in the enterprise computing space. Fuze Box presented a collaborative meeting system app that allows for the sharing of files and video conferencing over a wireless or 4G network.  Pocket Cloud on the other hand, demonstrated an app on the iPad that allows for access to a Windows, Mac OS or VMWare desktop environment from anywhere.

The evening rounded out with companies such as Box.net, Salesforce.com, YouSendIt and several others showing off their apps and presenting case studies where their apps have already succeeded. In all, the meet-up showed that enterprise computing is becoming an important area in the mobile space, and should be a lucrative area for app development in the coming years.
